The Phonograph Project

In 1877 Thomas Edison invented a way to record sound. He called it the Phonograph after the Greek roots of phono ….sound  and graph…….an instrument the records something.  This Phonograph used no electricity of any kind and was a totally physical process for both recording and playback. The sound is produced by the vibration of the needle creating sound waves. Those waves are then amplified by the open container.

Music Creation and Production students were given a table of various items to try to reproduce a phonograph and play back a record. The table had cups, rubber bands, balloons, glue, aluminum foil, hat pins etc……The winner would be rewarded by having me buy them lunch.  We ended up with several ideas and they all worked. Some designs were better at low sounds some were better at higher sounds. They were all so good that everyone got a free lunch.
